Dreamgirls – a firm family favourite for years – has finally come to the West End and we just could not wait to watch it.
Amber Riley was truly stunning as Effie. Not only was her vocal performance breathtaking, she and the rest of the cast had such roaring energy that we could not help but dance in the aisles.
The most anticipated song of the show, And I Am Telling You, was a magnificent and moving tearjerker that brought the whole audience to their feet. Jennifer Hudson’s rendition of the ballad is so iconic that it would be difficult for any singer, no matter their range or talent, to do it justice. However, the sheer power of Riley’s belting voice shone through, as not one person in The Savoy Theatre had a dry eye by the final bar.
Tucked away on Gloucester Place, the Z Hotel is a charming boutique bed and breakfast just a stone’s throw away from Marble Arch. With Afternoon Tea including bottomless Prosecco available throughout the day as well as cheese and wine served in the courtyard of an evening, the Z Hotel was the perfect location for our Girls’ Weekend catch up.
After the years of waiting for Dreamgirls to come to the West End and the ecstasy of knowing that the dream was becoming a reality, I’m now a little sad that the anticipation and excitement is over. The show, the music, the voices, the outfits – everything was bigger and better than I could have ever hoped for, and there is nobody in the world with whom I would have rather shared the experience!
